AP-CYCLING
COLLECTION NARRATIVE
'30539' Multi-Purpose//Multi-Seasonal
Megan Naysmith
My main project from my semester abroad studying at the Hochshule Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Our AP-Cycling focused on sustainable approaches to fashion. We took part in various Upcycling and zero waste workshops allowing us to learn the various methods that can lead to a sustainable design approach which we could take forward into our own collections.
The project started as a collaboration with the German fashion brand 'ARMEDANGELS'. We analysed their current collection and looked at what we could add as a zero waste or up cycled capsule collection. ARMEDANGELS also do a lot of work to campaign and raise funds for charities important to them and encourage social equality and and encourage ethical and sustainable design.
Taking inspiration from the current state of the fashion and textile industry I began looking into the huge issue of overconsumption of fast fashion and the textile waste that stems from that. I love fashion but hate consequences of fast fashion. How do we even start to tackle this though as it would require a mindset shift of an entire generation of consumers and brands...
Education of consumers and honest transparency of brands is essential for change and progress.
The aim of my collection is to portray this, through the fabrics sourced and used and the messages within the garments showing exactly whetre the various materials have come from, what they are made of and who and where the garments were made. I've followed fashion revolution for some time so when I saw ARMEDANGELS had a T-shirt surorting garment workers alongside the fashion revolution week I was further inspired by the 'Who Made Our Clothes' campaign.
I hope to create a collection that is both zero waste but still timeless and beautiful. I aim to make a capsule collection that contains various pieces that can be work year round by layering , wearing in different ways, and being able to be attached and detached to create multiple garments from the same lengths of fabric. I also want the garments to be adjustable to fit any size and shape and be loose and comfortable or fitted in areas as desired, to fit any body for any event. From day to night wear, a dress to a jumpsuit or a blazer to a trench coat.
